Call for Papers

The Asian Film Archive is calling for papers written on various aspects of Singapore Cinema from pre-tertiary and tertiary students. This will give students the opportunity to write film criticism and develop creative discussions about societal issues represented in film. Attractive prizes sponsored by iluma and Film Garde will be awarded to the winners of the Best Film Paper (Pre-tertiary & Tertiary categories). Winning papers will be presented at the Symposium on Singapore Cinema on 20th September 08, at the Singapore Management University.

Examples of topics that the students can write on include:

Representations of race, ethnicity, class & gender;
Current challenges affecting the local film industry;
The evolution of the golden age of 1950s and 1960s Singapore Cinema to the present;
Use of new media in contemporary filmmaking;
Representations of the Singapore landscape or identity;
Censorship and film policy in Singapore;
Examining the relationship between art and film;
Preservation of social consciousness on film

To apply, students have to submit:

a) an abstract (250 words) for their proposed paper

b) application form 

Selected finalists will be informed by 25th August 2008 and will be required to submit the full paper by 8th September 2008. The full paper length for pre-tertiary students is 1000-1500 words and a maximum of 3000 words for tertiary students.

Interested applicants are to submit the above materials in soft copy to info@asianfilmarchive.org, with the subject heading, “Call for Film Paper”. Applications must reach the Archive by 22 August 2008. An acknowledgement email will be sent upon receipt of application.
