Educators' Workshop
Film Literacy & Its Application in the Classroom
Course Description: This course is particularly relevant for educators who teach English, Literature, Social Studies, National Education, General Paper, and Visual/Media Communication. Participants will be coached on how to decode moving images through an exploration of narrative, filmic techniques and context. Through the use of film clips, educators will learn how to effectively teach film through analysis of key scenes. Prior to the workshop, participants will be given a list of films to view and prepare for discussion, which they can view through the two-month free online access at asiapacificfilms.com.

Session 2
of the workshop will allow time for participants to have in-depth discussions with the instructor on specific films screened and how films can be further utilised in their classrooms. Educators will have the opportunity to develop and discuss lesson plans for their area of curricular using films they have seen.

Instructor: Tan Bee Thiam is a film historian, curator and filmmaker. He lectures on Asian Cinema at the Nanyang Technological University and is author of a forthcoming book chapter on contemporary Singapore films (Cornell Press).
