Construction of the Past through Film
GROUP REGISTRATION (4 participants or more):
Workshop Description: This workshop will explore how filmmakers utilise and reinvent genre in the portrayal of memory and the construction of the past.
The first half of the workshop will involve participants in a close analysis of how certain directors self-consciously use and deconstruct genre in the representation
of a lost space and time, addressing issues of memory, history and violence. The second half of the workshop will ask how our reading of such films may inform our
collective understanding of the past through Singaporean film.
Participants will gain insight as to how film conditions and enhances our ideas about history, social and personal memory, and take away strategies on how to productively
use film in the literature, history and social studies classroom. This workshop will cater for educators who may be new to the analysis of film but who are keen to use film
as an aesthetic medium in the classroom.
Instructor: Ian Tan teaches Literature at Raffles Institution. He is interested in the relationship between literature, philosophy and film, and has written and spoken widely on these topics at seminars and conferences. His essays on film have been published in Senses of Cinema and Bright Lights Film Journal.
