Social Memory In Singapore Films
GROUP REGISTRATION (4 participants or more):
Workshop Description: This workshop explores the primacy of memory in Singapore
cinema. Participants will be encouraged to think about how and why the notion of
memory is important to Singapore and will be given ideas on introducing the concept
of social memory to students through Singapore films.
Some issues that will be dealt with include:
- What is the importance and purpose of "social memory" to Singapore?
- How are private and public memories documented?
- Why are Singapore filmmakers preoccupied with the idea of memory?
- Comparing documentaries and non-documentary films in their documentation of memory
Educators will also be taken through basic film literacy and techniques in relation
to the issues studied in the films shown. This course is particularly relevant for
educators teaching Literature, History, Geography, Social Studies, Theatre and Drama,
General Paper, National Education, English and Language Arts.
Instructor: Chew Yi Wei is a Graduate Research Scholar with the National
University of Singapore and is writing her PhD dissertation on films about the Chinese
Diaspora. She is the recipient of the Graduate Students Teaching Award (2011) and
has presented articles at film conferences. She has taught undergraduate modules
on Cultural Studies, Theatre and Film.
