Representing Cityscapes in Film

Workshop Description: How is Singapore represented as a city in films? This workshop will take a look at the various dimensions
of a city such as - its quirks, forgotten spaces and people, its urbanisation and the environment, socialspatial
relations, architecture, and transportation. Through the use of film clips, educators will gain insight
on how Singapore is represented as a city and discuss the issues related to such representations.
Comparisons to other Southeast Asian and international cities will also be made.
This course is catered for educators teaching the Humanities such as English, Literature, Social
Studies, Geography, General Paper and other subject matters like National Education, and
Instructor: Chew Yi Wei is completing her PhD dissertation on film and the Chinese Diaspora at the National University
of Singapore. She is the recipient of the Graduate Students Teaching Award (2011) and has presented
articles at film conferences. She has taught undergraduate modules on Cultural Studies, Theatre and Film.
Currently, Yiwei teaches Literature at the School of the Arts, Singapore.
